Nuclear power plant enters service in China

Aug 8, 2011

The 1,080 MW Unit 2 at China's Ling Ao II nuclear power plant entered commercial operation on August 7, according to plant owner China Guangdong Nuclear Power Co. (CGNPC).

The unit is a Chinese-designed CPR-1000 pressurized water reactor (PWR) that achieved first criticality on February 25 and was connected to the grid on May 3.

The unit is China's 14th operating nuclear power reactor and the second CPR-1000 to start up after Ling Ao II Unit 1, which entered operations in September 2010.

The CPR-1000 design, along with Westinghouse's AP1000 PWR, is a mainstay of China's planned near-term nuclear capacity expansion, with 17 CPR-1000s already under construction. Work is planned to begin on at least five more in 2011.
