Bird's Eye View: Inspecting Infrastructure By Helicopter

Check out some of the images taken on aerial patrols, which highlight problems detected on overhead infrastructure.

1. Failed Jumper Sleeve

A jumper sleeve failed on a new construction project, causing a line to operate.

A raptor built a nest in infrastructure.

 4. Animal-Inflicted Damage

Livestock caused damage to a wood pole. 

5. Issue on New Construction

During a new construction project, a conductor shoe made contact with an insulator.

This insulator has a broken bell. 

7.  Hole in a Pole

This pole sustained woodpecker damage.

8.  Washed Out Foundation

The tower foundation was washed out.

9. Broken Brace

The crossarm brace is broken. 

10. Spotlight on Static Wire

This photo shows an eccentric alignment of static wire attachment.

11. Melted Insulator

The polymer insulator melted due to a hot conductor sleeve.

12. Woodpecker Hole

The pole top cover sustained damage, the hardware was rusted and a woodpecker created a hole in the pole.  

13.Missing Cotter Key

During a new construction inspection, a cotter key is found missing.

14.  Pin Problems

The insulator attachment pin has a cotter key missing and the pin is backed out.

15. Grips With a Gap

During a new construction inspection, the conductor cushion grips have an excessive gap. They are likely not tight enough or the incorrect size for the conductor.
